Can You Help with Recovering Deleted Files from SD Card
Quote from zensoul on March 3, 2026, 1:58 amI need help. ASAP
I use my camera from time to time. I’m not a professional photographer, just shoot on weekends as a hobby. And today I decided it was time to transfer all the shots from my SD card to my computer. But during the process, instead of clicking copy, I clicked delete. DELETE. Obviously I need those files. How to recover deleted files from my SD card? They’re not in the Recycle Bin, I checked twice. No copies either. I also read a bit online, and everyone recommends some kind of SD card recovery software, but I’m not sure I’m smart enough to use it properly, so I’m more interested in how to recover deleted files from an SD card without software.
I really hope someone has time to read this and give me a few tips. I’m barely holding it together right now.

First of all, to calm you down a bit, recovering deleted files from the SD card is actually one of the simplest recovery scenarios. So don’t panic yet. That said, you will most likely need some kind of SD card recovery software.
Before we go further, I need to ask you if you did anything with the SD card after you deleted the files? If the SD card was not written after deletion (meaning you didn’t take new photos, didn’t record new videos, didn’t copy new data onto it), then your chances are very good. If you already shot new photos or recorded video, then the chances drop because of possible overwriting. Overwritten video files or photos are impossible to recover.
So tell me was the card used after deletion or not?

Omg, you calmed me down. No, I didn’t do anything with the SD card, just removed it from the computer and left it on my desk, then I came here to write this. It’s still just lying here on the table waiting while I figure out how I can recover data from my SD card. Please tell me what I need to do next??

Quote from DataNerd on March 3, 2026, 3:31 amWell, that’s great then. Choose a program for SD card data recovery and scan your SD card. That’s basically it.
** if you don’t know what to pick, just look up some comparison lists. Here’s the first list I found on Google https://ratings.7datarecovery.com/sd-memory-card-recovery/ and here’s one I found on Reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/DataRecoveryHelp/wiki/data-recovery-software/
There are both paid and free options in those lists. Pick one, install it on your computer, connect the card, and run a scan.

Quote from AlexR on March 3, 2026, 4:12 amIf the deleted files aren’t in the Recycle Bin and you don’t have backups, then you can recover deleted files from the SD card only with data recovery software.
If you want recover files without paying, PhotoRec or Recuva are at your service. If you prefer something with a normal interface and the ability to preview files before recovery, then go with Disk Drill or tools at the same level.

Quote from JustMike on March 3, 2026, 4:36 am@zensoul, you described the most basic SD card file recovery case possible. There are literally hundreds of guides about this. Your SD card is not unreadable, it’s not showing any errors and the files weren’t overwritten. This is literally the.most.ordinary.delete.scenario. I’d understand if you tried a few guides and it didn’t work. But did you even try? Or was it just easier to panic and post here instead of searching properly?
Here’s one of the first guides from the internet. Just follow what it says there about how to recover deleted files from the SD card and you’ll be fine 🤦♀️

Hey! Calm down. Some people just need to double-check everything before they start doing anything. What’s wrong with that? Not everyone is born an SD card recovery expert. Some people are afraid to click the wrong thing and make the situation worse and that’s NORMAL. If it’s that hard for you to answer basic questions on forums like this, just skip the thread. Don’t ruin the mood for other users or for yourself.

Quote from DataNerd on March 3, 2026, 12:51 pm@alexr I don’t think Recuva really fits serious SD card recovery cases. For OP’s situation fine, but if we talk about cases where the SD card not readable, shows as RAW, or the system says SD card unreadable, then Recuva is not the right tool. And I think that factor should be mentioned right away so later, if something more complicated happens, people don’t get surprised like why did Recuva recover data from SD card last time, but now it can’t? I’d rather suggest R-Undelete or R-Photo for photo recovery. They’re still free, but more reliable in more complex SD card data recovery situations.

Quote from zensoul on March 3, 2026, 1:21 pmWow! I didn’t expect so many replies and definitely didn’t expect someone to get that mad, sorry. Still, thank you to everyone who replied.
Will the programs you mentioned here help to recover deleted videos from the SD card as well? For example, if one day I accidentally press delete instead of copy again while transferring video files? Is SD card video recovery basically the same process as photo recovery?

You’re absolutely right. It doesn’t matter if it’s photo recovery or if you need to recover deleted videos from SD card, the recovery process itself doesn’t change. You scan the SD card with SD card recovery software, wait for the scan to finish, and then instead of selecting photos, you just filter or choose video files.

Not exactly. When it comes to video recovery, it’s important to know how your camera writes video files to the SD card. Some cameras store videos in a fragmented way and if the files turn out to be fragmented, not every tool we mentioned will be able to restore them into a playable state. For simple cases the process looks the same but fragmented video is a different story.
I know for sure that Disk Drill works well for video SD card recovery, because the developers recently added a module for fragmented video (ou can read about it here https://www.cleverfiles.com/help/advanced-camera-recovery-in-disk-drill.html ) So I’d suggest reading a bit about how your specific camera records video. Photography forums usually discuss that kind of thing in detail.

Quote from zensoul on March 3, 2026, 3:53 pmOkay, after reading all this, it’s probably better if I just avoid deleting anything in the first place. The recovery process sounds more complicated than I thought.
Thank you to everyone who helped and explained things. Have a great day, all of you!
