What is the best data recovery software for Windows in 2026?
Quote from markus88 on March 30, 2026, 9:11 amOkay, so I kind of had a mini panic attack this morning. I was cleaning up some folders and accidentally deleted a bunch of project files I hadn't backed up (yes, I know, I know). Now I'm desperately trying to figure out what's the best data recovery software for getting them back. I figured I'd just Google it and be done in five minutes, but I've been down a rabbit hole for an hour and I'm somehow more confused than when I started.
Every review site ranks things differently and half of them feel like affiliate bait. I keep seeing Disk Drill, R-Studio, Recuva, Stellar, and EaseUS thrown around… Has anyone here used one of these recently? I'm mainly trying to recover documents and photos from an external SSD (not sure if that changes things????).
Any advice would be seriously appreciated🙏

Quote from DataNerd on March 30, 2026, 4:01 pmHey @markus88, breathe, deleted doesn't always mean gone, so you might be okay! First, check the Recycle Bin. Many files that were deleted normally end up there and can be restored with a couple of clicks.
If the files aren’t there and you’re on an SSD, there’s one important thing to do right now: stop using that drive. Seriously, close whatever you have open and leave it alone to avoid overwriting data. SSDs also have this thing called TRIM that quietly wipes deleted data in the background, and once that kicks in, it's basically game over for recovery. The less you use the drive, the better your chances.
As for the best data recovery software for Windows 11, the tools you mentioned are actually the same ones most professionals recommend. Personally I'd start with Disk Drill. The interface doesn't make you feel like you need an IT degree, and the free version is good enough to at least show you what's recoverable before you commit to anything.

Quote from em_on_pc on March 30, 2026, 4:24 pmhow big are the files ur trying to recover, like is it a lot of stuff or just a few documents? asking bc i feel like that changes whether u wanna bother with a paid tool or if free data recovery software would do the job

Quote from bryan on March 31, 2026, 5:55 amHad a weird one where a Windows update made my partition just disappear. Tried EaseUS first, but it couldn't handle the filesystem recovery properly, and ended up on R-Studio which found stuff I'd written off. @markus88 situation , where the issue is just an accidental deletion, almost any solid recovery tool with a reliable deep scan should work, as long as it doesn’t write anything to the source drive during the process

It's like... a mix? mostly documents (word files, some pdfs, a few spreadsheets) but also maybe 200-300 photos from a trip I was editing. So not tiny but not like a full drive situation either. The documents are honestly the more important part.
And yeah that's actually what made me hesitate on just grabbing the first free data recovery software I found. Like if it was 3 files I wouldn't think twice but with photos + documents I didn't want to risk it on something sketchy.

Ugh good thinking but no such luck 😭 most of them are work-related: drafts for a client project and a couple of spreadsheets with notes I'd been building up for weeks. Also some trip photos I'd been editing in Lightroom. Nothing I ever emailed out or opened in Google Docs, I was working locally the whole time like an idiot lol. no cloud sync, no version history, nothing.

it's fine if ur just trying to recover deleted files from a flash drive or something simple. In the cases where I used it, though, it didn’t really help and I ended up moving on to other recovery tools.

Quote from em_on_pc on March 31, 2026, 11:54 am@markus88 ok so for ur situation yeah free only probably won't cut it, ur right to think that way. like recuva might grab some of the word files but photo recovery especially with edited files is where the more serious tools earn their price imo
honestly for what u described i'd just go with Disk Drill or R-Studio. it's way less stressful than stitching together free tools and hoping for the best. if you need real people's opinions rather than review sites, i recommend checking reddit threads like this. the general sub r/datarecovery gets these questions constantly, the regulars there don't sugarcoat anything

Quote from Ryan404 on March 31, 2026, 1:48 pmI tested several of these tools last year, so here’s a quick take.
For best file recovery software Windows, Disk Drill is the easiest starting point, freemium model and good results for deleted files and photos. R-Studio is ok too, but harder to use. GetDataBack works very well for NTFS. Stellar is decent but pricey. UFS Explorer targets professionals. PhotoRec is free but messy since it doesn’t restore filenames or folders.

Quote from DataRecoverExpert on March 31, 2026, 2:40 pm@markus88 From what you described, this looks like a pretty standard accidental deletion case.
There are a few solid options people usually try in cases like this. Since many of us here work around data recovery topics quite a lot, Disk Drill often ends up as a first recommendation because it’s easy to use and performs well in everyday recovery scenarios. But it’s not the only option. Stellar, GetDataBack, R-Studio, or similar tools can also work perfectly fine depending on the situation. Since this is just a simple deletion on a healthy external SSD, you can try one of them and see which one finds your files.
If you want deeper explanations or practical walkthroughs, these guides are worth reading:

Since your files were on SSD, there’s an extra factor called TRIM, as @DataNerd said. However, external SSDs are actually in a better spot than internal ones for recovery. TRIM typically doesn't fire on externally connected drives the same way it does on system SSDs, which means your window for recovery is wider.

Quote from phillyjohn on March 31, 2026, 4:30 pmI used Disk Drill last year when I accidentally formatted the wrong external drive. Scan found basically everything, recovered it all fine. The read-only mode during scanning and file preview before restore are what sold me. Best data recovery software pc users can actually get through without a headache imo 👍

Quote from markus88 on March 31, 2026, 6:13 pmUPDATE for everyone who helped
I got them back 🥹
Ran ta scan with Disk Drill like most of you suggested, and honestly the results were better than I expected. Almost all the Word files and spreadsheets came back with filenames intact, and out of the 200-300 photos maybe 10 were either missing or opened corrupted. Given that I was genuinely convinced everything was gone this morning, I'll take it.
@chris_89 I'm also setting up automatic cloud sync tonight so we never have to do this again lol. lesson absolutely learned
The client deadline is tomorrow and I think I have everything I need so... crisis averted? barely?
Thanks everyone seriously!
